Goose Update!

Goose had his first surgery this past weekend thanks to the support and donations of his fans! He is recovering well and we'll have a better idea in a week or so about how to proceed.

For those that aren't familiar, Goose is an adorable all-black male kitten that was found with his sister in a yard in Philadelphia. They were brought to Philadelphia Animal Control by a kind Samaritan and were placed on the shelter’s urgent rescue list and needed out of the shelter by 6pm or would be euthanized. The shelter noted that Goose has severe ulcerations and damage to his lips, gums, teeth, and mouth, likely from some sort of electrical damage, which were beyond the scope of the veterinary care this high-volume, kill shelter could provide. Our rescue focuses on special needs and medically urgent kittens, and thanks to one of our amazing foster parents who is comfortable with such cases, we were able to pull Goose and his sister from the shelter just in the nick of time.

Since entering foster care, Goose has gained weight rapidly, as a kitten should, and is able to eat and drink with no issues. He is missing all of the hard palatal tissue where his teeth should be, but amazingly, some of his incisors have begun to grow back. He has also lost a sizeable amount of palatal bone on the left side of his mouth and his right side is dead and will likely fall out. This will leave him with a hole in his palate in the front part of his upper jaw that will communicate with his nasal cavity. He also continues to lose critical bone mass and that hole in his mouth becomes a tad larger every day. Despite the extensive degree of Goose's injuries, he is making a significant recovery and is a happy, playful kitten.

The approximate veterinary cost for Goose is close to $6000.00 and he will need two critical, involved surgeries. The 1st  surgery would be a combination of anesthetized exam + imaging (CT) to get a better idea of the extent of the palatal defect, tissue around the upper lips/canine teeth for planning for the definitive surgery, and extraction of teeth on the upper and lower jaws - mainly incisors/canines +/- some of the upper front premolars in order to have the areas where the flaps needed for the 2nd surgery will be only tissue/no teeth thus allowing larger flaps to cover his palatal defect.

Meet Goose, our newest kitten & first recipient of The Bunny Fund! Goose & his sister, Clara, were pulled from ACCT & while his sister is doing well, he has a very guarded prognosis. Goose presumably has electrical burns on and in the front of his mouth. He is missing half of his upper and lower lips, the front of his lower jaw is missing the gums so the bone is exposed (as it is partially on the upper as well), and he is missing about half of the tissue on the roof of his mouth. This has also caused his baby teeth to die and begin to fall out. The burns also have left him with about half of a tongue. The lack of extra skin to do any kind of grafts is prohibiting us from doing any kind of restorative surgery at this time. All of these factors make recovery a long and dangerous road. There is threat of infection from exposed bone, undernourishment from not eating properly, dehydration from not being able to drink properly, and a myriad of other obstacles. HOWEVER <end bad news> he's doing phenomenally well! He has a wonderful appetite, takes his antibiotics and pain meds, tolerates mouth cleaning post-eating, and has started to greet his foster mom when she enters the room. He's also started to put up a fight when receiving his subcutaneous fluids, which leads us to believe his strength is greatly improving. The even better news? We THINK, due to a pink color on the edge of his palette wound, that the flesh there is beginning to regenerate!
Goose is in a fantastic foster home & we're hoping for the best.
Goose is our first member of The Bunny Fund, was established in memory of a tiny, paralyzed kitten named Bunny who was pulled from Philadelphia's high-kill Animal Control shelter. She had severe damage to her pelvis, colon, and legs, and while she lived a short time, she was given the chance to receive medical care that she may not have otherwise had the opportunity to. The Bunny Fund is specifically for special needs and medically urgent cats & kittens.
♥ Goose's care is expected to be quite costly. To donate to help save him, make a donation via The Bunny Fund. ♥
